Motorhome hire | Top 5 film locations in the UK

Top 5 film locations in the UK

Alnwick Castle

The summer holiday season is now in full swing, so what better way to theme your sightseeing incorporating some film tourism into your trip?  With so many British film locations now enjoyed on screens around the world, we’ve helped start you off by compiling a list of our top five:

Downhill Beach, County Londonderry (Game of Thrones)

One of Game of Thrones’ most iconic locations in the form of Dragonstone, Downhill Beach, part of an impressive 11 km length of sand and surf, offers plenty of scope for a family day out at the coast. The site also hosts the dramatically situated Mussenden Temple, which promises a postcard-worthy view of the surrounding coast.

The nearest town is Castlerock which provides excellent road links.

The village of Bampton, Oxfordshire (Downton Abbey)

Many of Downton Abbey’s key scenes have involved St Mary’s Church – amongst other buildings – in Bampton, otherwise known as Downton to fans of the show.  There are several companies that offer themed tours to this popular part of the Oxfordshire Cotswolds from just £7.50 per adult and with concessionary discounts, find out more at Visit Oxfordshire.

Alnwick Castle, Northumberland (Harry Potter)

Alnwick Castle is another site you will recognise from Downton Abbey, having appeared as Brancaster Castle in the 2014 Christmas special, but perhaps more notably as Hogwarts from the first two Harry Potter films.  With the opportunity to fly your own broomstick, this iconic British castle promises to leave both young and old enchanted…

Tip: book online up to 24 hours in advance and save 5%.

Lyme Park, Cheshire

Lyme Park, Cheshire (Pride and Prejudice)

Lyme Park, otherwise largely recognised as Jane Austen’s Pemberley, is a National Trust site boasting a 1,300 acre estate.  With such sights to see as the house’s lavish interior, evocative herds of deer and the Edwardian rose garden, we doubt you will be disappointed – although there are no guarantees that Mr Darcy will emerge from the lake.

Bodmin Moor, Cornwall (Poldark)

Just one of many Cornish locations to feature in the ratings smasher Poldark series, fans of this show will recognise the exterior of Nampara, Ross Poldark’s cottage, at this site.  No stranger to film crews, it also featured in the BBC’s adaptation of Daphne du Maurier’s Jamaica Inn.  Find a full list of Poldark film locations at Visit Cornwall and more holiday ideas here.

Bodmin Moor, Corwnall

A guide to the best festivals for kids this year

With the summer holidays on the horizon, many parents across the country will be trying to come up with creative, fun activities for their children. And with the UK set for some great weather over the coming weeks (fingers crossed!), we have put a list together of the best festivals for kids and families this year.

Camp Bestival (30 July – 2 August). An explosion of song and dance, musical theatre, art and live performance, they say that kids are king at Camp Bestival. There is an avalanche of activities for children of all ages, with a large section of the festival site devoted to them at the Upper Kid’s Garden. Activities here include the likes of BigTopMania where they can learn a circus skill, a Bouncy Castle, bikes and go-carts, a separate Toddlers’ Area and a pioneering Breastival Mother and Baby Chill Out space. There’s also another separate area dedicated to 13-17s, called The Den. Kids aged 4 and under can get tickets for free.

Tickets are still available here.

Kendal Calling (30 July – 2 August). Taking place the same time as Bestival, Kendal Calling is growing as a wonderful UK festival for families and is celebrating its 10th birthday this year.
